AFL Capricornia

AFL Capricornia

AFL Capricornia is an Australian rules football competition in the Rockhampton and Gladstone regions of Central Queensland, Australia,it is an amateur league, it is the only competition in Queensland outside of Cairns and Brisbane to run a full league that includes seniors to juniors at all six clubs. The competition includes senior, reserves, under 17's, under 15's and Under 13's.

Representative teams

The regions representative team originally had colours that consisted of Yellow, Black and White, and were known as the TAIPANS, until the reconfiguration of the AFL Queensland. In the mix up another representative team closer to Brisbane was given the nickname Taipans, this forced the AFL Capricornia to choose a different identity. It has been a hard decision, but it has been one that people are starting to accept. A new era started for the region so a new entity had to emerge, there colours were changed to Dark Blue, and White, and eventually they will choose a new logo, insignia.

History

The league began in the late 1960s as the Rockhampton Football Association with clubs from Parkhurst, Wandal, Parkana and Gladstone. The league was not recognised by any other competition until 1972 when it changed its name to Rockhampton Australian Football Association, with clubs playing in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Biloela and Blackwater. At one stage AFL there were nine teams in the competition.

The RAFA again changed its name from Rockhampton to Capricornia, then a few years later changed the word "Association" to "League", becoming the Capricornia AFL. With the restructuring of Australian football competitions at the instigation of the Australian Football League in the late 1990s, the league became the AFL Capricornia.
