Stainton is one of the few areas within the boundaries of modern-day Middlesbrough to have been named in the
Domesday Book of1086 . Indeed, it has been a settlement since pre-Saxon times, while its name reveals it to have been an area ofScandinavia n residence.Stainton Church dates back to the
12th Century . The marriage there on10 October 1725 , of James Cook and Grace Pace, parents of the eventual explorer and navigator,Captain James Cook , is noted in the church register.
