year = 2005The borough of Redcar & Cleveland is a
unitary authority in the ceremonial county ofNorth Yorkshire ,England consisting ofRedcar ,Saltburn-by-the-Sea ,Guisborough , and small towns such asBrotton , Skelton and Loftus. It had a resident population of 139,132 in 2001, and is part of theTees Valley economic area. It is represented in Parliament by the barristerVera Baird (Labour) for the Redcar constituency and by Ashok Kumar (Labour) for the Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland constituency. The district was created in 1974 as the borough of Langbaurgh, one of four districts of the new
non-metropolitan county of Cleveland. It was formed from the Coatham, Eston Grange, Kirkleatham, Ormesby, Redcar and South Bank wards of the county borough ofTeesside , along withGuisborough , Loftus,Saltburn and Marske-by-the-Sea andSkelton and Brotton urban district s, from theNorth Riding of Yorkshire . The borough was named after the ancient Langbaurghwapentake ofYorkshire . OnJanuary 1 1988 the borough was renamed as Langbaurgh-on-Tees.Cleveland was abolished on
1 April ,1996 , with its districts becoming unitary authorities. At this time Langbaurgh-on-Tees was renamed Redcar and Cleveland. The Borough Council's administrative HQ is situated in the Teesville area of Greater Eston, on Fabian Road. It is unlikely that the Town Hall will remain in Eston and there are plans to move the facilities on the site to Redcar.Fact|date=September 2008 The Council already has offices in Redcar at Kirkleatham Street and in Guisborough.
With typical political confusion associated with the Teesside region the areas south of the Tees are designated as part of the ceremonial/geographical county of North Yorkshire whilst the whole region, as Tees Valley, exists alongside Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to form the North East region.
