Wilton is a small village in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England.

Geography

It is located between Redcar and Eston at the base of Eston Hills - to the east of Eston Nab. The village is noted for its golf course and castle. It lies just south of the A174. On the other side of the A174, is the village of Lazenby.

History

The parish [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/8386 church] is dedicated to St Cuthbert. Wilton Castle was sold to ICI in the 1940s.

ICI Wilton

On the north side of the A174, in a square enclosed by the A1053, A1085, and A1042, is the former ICI chemical works, which was opened by the Queen in 1956. From the hills near Wilton, you can see most of the [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/24988 site] . It has a distinctive [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/293745 wide] cooling tower. At night, the site is luminously [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/111909 lit up] .

From 1995, the [http://www.wiltoninternational.co.uk Wilton International] site became multi-occupancy with parts of the [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/101328 site] sold off, making olefins for Huntsman Petrochemicals which since 2006 has been called SABIC UK Petrochemicals, and other companies such as Invista, Uniqema, and Dow. The site is run by [http://www.sembutilities.co.uk SembCorp Utilities] . Basell [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1550912.stm closed] its polypropylene plant in 2001. BP [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1502663.stm closed] its polythene plant, which it bought from ICI in 1982, in 2001.

Across from the [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/493491 ICI works] , over the A1085 to the north is the Corus Group Lackenby steelworks.
