Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (Arts High or LACHSA, pronounced|ˈlæksə) is a public high school that operates on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California, United States. Though it shares facilities with the university, the two schools' activities tend to be separate. It is operated by the Los Angeles County Office of Education. [ [http://www.lacoe.edu LACOE Home Version 6.0 ] ] LACHSA maintains a unique affiliation with International Polytechnic High School, which is also run by LACOE.

The school specializes in the training of dance, film, music, theatre, and visual arts. It is the only arts high school in Los Angeles that allows students from any district within Los Angeles County to attend. It is also one of few schools whose admissions aren't based on magnet points.

Due to the school being based on a large college campus, students are given a level of freedom not usually enjoyed in high school.

Admission

Students who want to enroll in this school audition to get in. Usually, 75-95% of the first-year LACHSA students are freshmen (9th grade). Few are sophomores (10th grade) and juniors (11th grade). This is because it is much harder for an incoming sophomores and juniors to get in. There are usually exceedingly few incoming seniors (12th grade). Each year, around 800+ students audition to get in, but only around 130 are accepted and enroll.

Each art department has a separate audition process and students can only audition for one department. Enrolled students can change into a different department with the approval of the department chairs and counselors. Students are now allowed to double major once they get into LACHSA.

Population

LACHSA has four departments. Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. There are also sub-departments within each of the art areas. The Theatre department has a musical theatre department and a film department. In the Music Department, there are vocalists and there are instrumentalists. The Music Department has the most students, followed by the Theatre Department, Visual Arts and Dance.
