Purdue University North Central is located on 305
acres (1.23 km²) in rural LaPorte County nearWestville, Indiana along U.S. Highway 421. Purdue University North Central has three academic buildings and a veterinary emergency facility. The grounds of Purdue University North Central have Shakespeare's Garden adjacent to a picturesque pond,tennis courts, abaseball diamond, and four outdoorbasketball courts as well as a pedestrian mall between the library and Schwartz Hall, the oldest academic building on campus.For the Fall semester of 2006, Purdue North Central has 3,724 students, of which slightly less than half (1,541 students) are from LaPorte County. Female students (2,174; 58.4%) outnumber male (1,550; 41.6%) by 40%. Almost all are
undergraduate students, except for the 89 graduate students in its two master's program. The majority (2,253; 60.5%) are full-time students taking 12 or more credit hours.There are 520 students (14%) identified as ethnic minorities, of which there are 169 (4.5%) African-American; 35 (0.9%) Asian-American; 29 (0.8%) American Indian; 163 (4.4%) Hispanic; and 124 (3.3%) identified as "other" minorities. History
Purdue University North Central's first permanent site in which classes were offered was in
John H. Barker 's former mansion in 1948 atMichigan City, Indiana , which was donated by his daughter, Catherine Barker Hickox. Purdue University North Central first opened for classes at its current site in1967 after having started offering classes inLaPorte, Indiana during1948 and inMichigan City, Indiana during1949 .Athletics
Purdue University North Central teams are members of NAIA and compete within the
Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference . Intercollegiately, Purdue University North Central sponsors a men's basketball team, a men's baseball team, and a women'ssoftball team. The moniker of Purdue University North Central's teams is the Panthers. The official mascot is Pounce, the Panther.Prior to the panthers moniker, Purdue University North Central's moniker for its intercollegiate athletics teams was the Centaurs from
