Westville is a town in New Durham Township, LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,116 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Michigan City, Indiana-La Porte, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Westville is located at coor dms|41|32|45|N|86|54|15|W|city (41.545912, -86.904033)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,116 people, 897 households, and 556 families residing in the town. The population density was 677.0 people per square mile (261.0/km²). There were 984 housing units at an average density of 314.8/sq mi (121.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.27% White, 1.23% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.71% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.

There were 897 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,761, and the median income for a family was $44,524. Males had a median income of $33,906 versus $21,525 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,306. About 3.3% of families and 6.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.0% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
