Amtrak's Niagara Falls, New York station is located at the corner of 27th Street and Lockport Road. It serves as an enclosed waiting area and ticket-selling location on the western terminus of the Empire Corridor. There is no platform, however, so trains are boarded in the open air of the much larger CSX yard on whose northwestern border it is sited. The station was originally built as a freight depot in 1959 by the Lehigh Valley Railroad.[2][3]

The future

State and local governments plan on building a new multi-million dollar intermodal transportation center out of the U.S. Customhouse to replace the current station.[4] This work is to be part of a three phase project titled the Niagara Falls International Railway Station.[4] It calls for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to share with Amtrak a complex consisting of the old customhouse and modern additions.[4]

The project consists of three phases, with a total estimated cost of $44 million.[5] Construction on the project began in August 2010, with funding only for the first two phases.[4]

In October 2010, the US Department of Transportation released $16.5 million in funds from the TIGER program for work on the final phase of the International Station project.[4][6]
