David Asper (born November 26, 1958) is a Canadian businessman and lawyer. He is the former Executive Vice President of the Canadian media company CanWest Global Communications Corp. He is also a Professor at the Robson Hall Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Asper is the eldest son of the late Izzy Asper, founder of CanWest Global. He is the brother of Leonard Asper, former president of CanWest Global.
In the mid-1980s, Asper represented David Milgaard, who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1970. With Asper arguing the case before the Supreme Court of Canada, Milgaard's conviction was overturned in 1992.[1]
Asper endorsed Toronto Conservative candidate and former Global news anchor Peter Kent in the 2006 Canadian federal election.
Asper is a former trustee of the Fraser Institute.
Asper was one of the main proponents behind building a new stadium for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before dropping out in late 2010.
Asper is married to Ruth Asper and has two sons, Daniel and Max and a daughter Rebecca.
