Coordinates: 54°59′38″N 7°19′34″W / 54.994°N 7.326°W The Derry Urban Area (Irish: Limistéar Uirbeach Dhoire) is the urban area that includes and surrounds the city of Derry in Northern Ireland, and is part of the Derry City Council area. It had a population of 93,512 in the 2001 census. It is the second largest urban area in Northern Ireland (after Belfast) and the fourth largest urban area in Ireland (after Dublin, Belfast, and Cork).
The Derry Urban Area is usually taken to be composed of Derry City, Culmore, New Buildings and Strathfoyle. But now with distances people are willing to commute to work and shop in the city, Derry's urban area could soon occupy Eglinton and Strabane. Recently more and more people have opted to move just over the Republic of Ireland – United Kingdom border and, should the border not be acknowledged, the urban area could further include the County Donegal border settlements of Killea, Bridgend, Muff and even Quigley's Point and Burnfoot.
The Greater Derry area, that area within about 20 miles of the city, has a population of 237,000[1] and comprises Derry City Council, Limavady Borough Council, Strabane District council excluding the Castlederg area, and parts of North East Donegal in the Irish Republic, namely Inishowen, Letterkenny, Ballybofey/Stranorlar and Lifford.[2] The term, like the term Greater Belfast, has no official relevance particularly in this case since it incorporates areas from two jurisdictions, however it is used for ease of reference.
