Torphins

Torphins is a village in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, about 20 miles west of Aberdeen. It is on the A980 road, about 6 miles north-west of Banchory, and was once served by the Great North of Scotland Railway.

With a population of 2000 it is one of the larger villages in Deeside, but it is not as big as Aboyne or Ballater.

Amenities

The village has many facilities including a small primary school, large park with play area, A car dealer, two tennis courts, a bowling green, a curling rink, a doctors surgery and a variety of shops including a butcher, a baker, a hairdressers, a furniture maker, a Co-operative grocer and a chemist. There is a Church of Scotland church, which is part of of the "Mid Deeside United Churches" with Kincardine O'Neil and Lumphanan. Torphins has a hotel, the Learney Arms, and its own Town Hall.

Torphins was home to a War Memorial Maternity Hospital. As a result, many notable people from Deeside have been born in Torphins. The building however has recently become a GP clinic, and no longer offers maternity facilities.

There is a 9 hole golf course about a mile out of Torphins, not that the locals play much golf on it, they are more interested in chasing and catching a "Deeside spotted Haggis" which are very rare these days, and can only be found between the first and fourth holes. On a rainy day you see the locals running on the fairway chasing these rare animals and eating them for their supper.

Public transport

The 202 Stagecoach Bluebird bus provides service to Aberdeen . There are other infrequent connections on the 210, 413, and the Royal Mail PB74 postbus.
