List of English words of Romanian origin
- List of English words of Romanian origin
These are words in the English language which come from Romanian.
*pastrami - a type of cured meat
Usually cited as being from the Romanian verb "a păstra", to keep or preserve, which entered into Yiddish and hence into English. [http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=pastrami&searchmode=none] Another theory suggests it is ultimately from Turkish and entered into Romanian as a loanword, and another suggests connections with Greek "patonos", "I salt".
Note that there is only one word of common usage in English which may claim Romanian origin. This is due largely to the language's isolation from proper Latin, as well as the political isolation endured by the country. These conditions have prevented the spread of Romanian vocabulary outside of its native land.
