San Miguel de Gualdape

San Miguel de Gualdape

San Miguel de Gualdape was the first European settlement inside what is now United States territory, founded by Spaniard Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón in 1526. A group of 600 colonists joined Ayllón, launching their journey from the colonial city of Santo Domingo. The approximate location of their landing is the Peedee river area off the lower Waccamaw river in what is now South Carolina.

Upon not finding Natives with whom to trade, the settlers later relocated off the coast of Georgia, possibly at Sapelo Island. The settlement didn't last long, and was abandoned after about 3 months. All but 150 of the colonists died including Ayllón.

The first group of African Americans to set foot on what is now the United States were brought by Ayllón to erect the settlement. Upon political disputes within the settlers, there was an uprising among the slaves, which fled to the interior and presumably settled with the native American people.
