Older British era spellings: Chinchpugli and Chinchpooghly. the name is derived from two different words; chinch means tamarind and pokali (pofali) means betel nut. Probably there must be many trees of tamarind and betel nut in the area and hence it is so named.

Schools and hospitals
Chinchpokli has a school established some 90 years ago named after Velji Lakhamshi Napoo High School. Today the school has some 3000 to 5000 students taught in both English and Gujarati.
It also has Kasturba Gandhi Municipal Hospital which is run by the BrihanMumbai Municipal corporation. It is reputed for the treatment of contagious diseases.
Chinchpokli's Chintamani Ganapati
Chinchpoklicha Chintamani, the oldest and most famous Ganapati idol,[citation needed] sits very near to the Chinchpokli station during Ganesh festival. This Ganesha is one of the biggest crowd pullers in Mumbai and is known as Chinchpoklicha Chintamani or Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani.
Mambai High school is also old in chinchpokli it has balashram where poor children are studying in that hostel.
Religious Places
Chinchpokli hosts various Hindu Temples, Jain Temples, Jain Sthanaks, Mosques etc.
The Jain Dharma Sthanak, situated in the D L Jain Chawl, is one of the oldest structures in the area. It has one of the largest prayer halls in Jain Sthanaks of mumbai.
In the Hindu Saibaba temple in kalyandas wadi, Hanuman temple below railway bridge ans Datt Mandir at Bawala Compound, Santoshi Mata Temple at Chichpokali West are famous.
There is a Jewish cemetery by the side of the railway tracks on the western side of the railway station.
