Introduction

Navi Mumbai is envisaged as a metro sized counter magnet to reduce the pressure on the Mumbai metropolis. It is planned as a polycentric new town with a series of nodal concentrations along mass-transport corridors. When fully built, it is expected to have 14 such townships (nodes) with a combined population holding capacity of 4 millions and one million jobs. Kamothe is one of these 14 nodes and is being developed by CIDCO.

Transport

Autorickshaws provide the primary means of personal local transportation. Travelling to and fro from Mansarovar Rly. Station uptil the Mumbai-Pune Highway by autorickshaw by share-autos is preferred as there is no meter-running system.

Kamothe is connected to Mumbai by rail on the Harbour line of the Central Railway, part of the Mumbai suburban railway. Travelling to destinations in Mumbai by rail often involves taking a train to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus first. Mansarovar Railway Station has been inaugurated recently on 28th of March 2008. Since then, all the trains plying between CST and Panvel halt at the station. This station has been a boon to all the working residents of Kamothe.

The orange NMMT public buses and State Transport public buses serve as a much cheaper means of transportation over a long distance to various nodes throught New Mumbai. Buses starting from Panvel halt at Kamothe bus stop on the Highway allowing passengers direct and fast passage to destinations across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. State Transport buses are very actively used here unlike the other parts of New Mumbai, as the help cutting the travelling time considerably. State Transport buses have routes from Panvel Bus Depot to Dadar (Mumbai) and also to Thane.
