Welling is a hamlet in southern
Alberta ,Canada . It is located north of the junction of Highway 5 and Highway 52, 30 km south of the city of Lethbridge.Population: 53 (2001 census)
History
The hamlet was first settled at the turn of the 20th century by
Mormon pioneers fromUtah . Its name came from the Welling Branch, the Mormon congregation that was established there in 1903. The Welling Branch was named afterJob Welling ofFarmington, Utah . Welling is the historic site of the world's first side-delivery rodeo bucking chute. In 1916 Welling rancher, John W. Bascom, with his sons, put on ranch rodeos for which they designed and built rodeo's first side-delivery bronc chute. Each of the Bascom sons - Raymond, Melvin, Earl and Weldon - have been inducted into Halls of Fame for their rodeo achievements. Earl Bascom went on to invent other pieces of rodeo equipment, including the hornless rodeo saddle and the one-hand bareback rigging, and later became an internationally-known artist and sculptor as well.Notable people
