Mitalee Jagtap VaradkarOfficial website dff.nic.in The National Film Award for Best Actress (officially known as Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Actress) is an honor presented annually at the National Film Awards of India to an actress who has delivered the best performance in a leading role within the Indian film industry.[1] The award was first given in 1968.[2]
The first recipient was Nargis Dutt from Bollywood, who was honored at the 15th National Film Award (1968) for her performance in Raat Aur Din[3] The actresses who have won it the most in this category are Shabana Azmi - with five wins,[4] followed by Sharada with three. Four actresses—Smita Patil, Archana, Shobhana and Tabu—have won the award twice.
Archana is the only actress to be honoured on two occasions for performing in two different languages. She got her first award for the Tamil film Veedu in 1988 and the second in 1989 for the Telugu film Daasi. Monisha Unni was the youngest actress to win this honour when she won the award for the Malayalam film Nakhakshathangal in 1987.[5]
The most recent recipients were Saranya Ponvannan (Tamil) and Mitalee Jagtap Varadkar (Marathi), who were honored at the 58th National Film Awards ceremony (2011) for their performances in Thenmerku Paruvakaatru and Baboo Band Baaja, respectively.[6]
