James L. Knight Center

James L. Knight Center

The James L. Knight Center is a 4,686-seat concert hall and theatre in Miami, Florida. It is named in memory of James Landon Knight, the newspaper publisher whose businesses included The Miami Herald. It is part of the Miami Convention Center.

The arena has 16,000 square feet of staging area, plus 3,894 permanent seats on two tiers. It was completed in 1982 and is attached to the 600-room Hyatt Miami. The center is made up of three partners, the City of Miami, the University of Miami and the Hyatt Regency hotel. The City of Miami manages the Miami Convention Center and the James L. Knight Auditorium. The University of Miami occupies two floors within the Hyatt Regency, the 3rd and 4th floors and that is the University of Miami Conference Center. The conference center consists of a small, 500-seat theater (Ashe Auditorium), a 117-seat lecture hall (Miami Lecture Hall) and 19 meeting rooms of difference sizes and capacities. Knight Center served as home to the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball program from its reinstatement in 1985 until the opening of the Miami Arena in 1988.
