Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism

The Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism (CIIJ) strives to improve the four Rs of the journalism pipeline: recruitment, retention, revitalization, research.

Founded at San Francisco State University in 1990 by Betty Medsger, the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism believes that accurate and responsible journalism reflects the changing demographics of the society it serves. The center develops programs and conducts research aimed at recruiting, retaining and revitalizing journalists and journalism educators. In addition, the organization seeks to make journalism more inclusive from the classroom to the newsroom.

Programs run by CIIJ

  • Pop and Politics is an award-winning online magazine that engages young Americans in the civic life of the nation by empowering them to be informed citizens. The publication critiques and covers the way pop culture and politics intersect, and gives a space for young writers to showcase their journalistic talents.
  • Prime Movers is a pilot initiative funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. It features a mentoring component that brings together a veteran journalist with a new journalist with the goal of helping the younger journalist improve his or her skills, develop a career focus, and encourage him/her to stay in the profession. Both the veteran (the Prime Mover) and the new journalist (the Rising Star) then work with a local high school to help improve their newspaper journalism program.
