- Electoral district of Blacktown
Blacktown is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the
Australia n state ofNew South Wales . It is a 31.49 km² urban electorate inSydney 's outer west, taking in the suburbs of Blacktown, Doonside and Marayong. There were 44,387 electors enrolled in the district as of the 1999 state election.Blacktown is known as a largely working-class area, and as such, the electorate has tended to strongly support the
Australian Labor Party , which has held the seat for all but three years since its inception. It was briefly marginal during the late 1950s, when long-serving member John Freeman tried and failed to find a safer seat before losing to theLiberal Party of Australia 'sAlfred Dennis , but has since reverted to its usual tendencies. The current member for Blacktown,Paul Gibson , a prominent backbencher in the Iemma government, holds the seat by a margin of approximately 20%, and is unlikely to face a challenge from any other party in the foreseeable future.Members for Blacktown
