radio station , broadcasting at 101.5 FM inHamilton, Ontario . Thiscampus radio station is owned and operated by the Mohawk Students' Association atMohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario Canada.CIOI was originally launched in
1975 as CHMR, broadcasting oncarrier current andcable FM . The station launched on FM on March 23rd in1998 .The station operates independently of the media programs at Mohawk College, but works cooperatively with Mohawk College's Communications Media and Radio
Broadcasting /Journalism Programs. Although any student at the college may volunteer to work at the station, priority is generally given to students who are currently studying in the Broadcasting and Communications courses. Additionally a number of community members volunteer their time by hosting genre-specific radio programs. This combination of student-themed programming coupled with community-based and local-music supported programming allows C101.5 FM to provide a diversity in broadcasting for the Hamilton Ontario market. The C101.5 FM studios are located on the second floor of the Student Centre at Mohawk College. The Student Centre is located at the west side of the campus. In 2004 the Mohawk Students' Association offices along with the C101.5 FM studios and offices underwent a major renovation when the Student Centre was upgraded. The original layout of the station included a "mezzanine" area which contained a lounge, library and offices. There were three studios located at a half-level lower, overlooking the Arnold Centre (Student lounge). There was a master control stddio, an auxiliary/news booth and a production studio. During renovations this lower level was removed. All studios are now located on the main level and are now enjoy barrier free access.
C101.5 FM's condition of license is to be an alternative to mainstream radio. The station's basic playlist consists of "non-mainstream" music such as local bands and new music, but also has specialty programming. The station vigorously supports the local Hamilton music environment and produces an annual music festival aimed at promoting local Hamilton music exclusively. This project called the C+C Music Festival is co-produced by fellow campus-community radio station CFMU-FM, located on the campus of McMaster University in Hamilton. Programming at C101.5 FM consists of indie-style music and a mix of cultural and ethnic broadcasts, and a segment of spoken word and educational programming.
