What's He Building in There? is an Canadian experimental metal band, formed in 2006 in Waterloo, Ontario, CA. The music combines elements of funk/heavy funk, metal, avant-garde metal and progressive. The band, named after a Tom Waits quote, is known for their live show in which they generally wear outrageous costumes. The music and live show can only be described by a quote from [http://tangiblesounds.com Tangible Sounds] ; "WHBIT? creates a sort of audio psychosis that totally envelopes and surrounds the listener like a straight jacket." cite journal| month=June |year=2007 |author=Lavigne, Spencer |title=What's He Building in There? History

What's He Building in There? was formed in 2006 in Waterloo, Ontario by drummer, Liam Epps, vocalist, Chris Schroeder, bassist, Hal Jaques, guitarist, David Halk and guitarist, Chris Cookson. The members were previously of the band Abacus, which disbanded in 2006 (after their 2005 EP release) due to key member Darren Hartley leaving the band to be with his kids and wife. The band released their debut, self-titled album under Year of the Sun Records in May of 2007. The album was only released on a Canadian independent label, and distributed throughout the US by The End Records. Eventually they released an avant-garde music video for the single Avian Taxi, which has sparked interest due to the fact it takes place in a kid's play place with the band dressed in many different costumes (giant lobsters, a gecko) with Darren Hartley's oldest child as the main character in the epic tale.

After a series of tours supporting the debut album, David Halk and Chris Cookson (both guitarists) left to continue their education. Mason Tikl (guitar - best known from his solo work) and Aiden Stevenson (bass) joined the band in March of 2008. Hal Jaques moved over to play guitar. In the first couple months of the new line up, the band wrote 3 new songs that they played on their July 2008 western Canada tour.

In September of 2008, Aiden Stevenson left the band to also continue with education. They will be touring eastern Canada in October of 2008, and speculation has it that they will be touring the US for the first time in the first half of 2009. There are plans to record a new album also within 2009.
