The Mina Rosita Vieja disaster was the worst disaster in Mexico's coal mining history[citation needed]. It occurred on February 27, 1908 when a huge explosion rocked the Rosita Vieja Coal Mine near the town of San Juan de Sabinas, Coahuila. The explosion led to the deaths of 200 miners in shaft No. 2.
The mine boss was Harry Turner. There was a first explosion, and the next day when Mr. Turner went into the mine to lead the rescue work, a second explosion killed him.
