next_route=17Highway 16 is one of the shortest highways in the province of
Ontario ,Canada ; this is because most of it was upgraded and renumbered as Highway 416.The remaining Highway 16 runs from Highway 416, exit 1 (just north of Highway 401 at Johnstown) to the
Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge , where it becomesNew York State Route 812 in theUnited States .Prior to the construction of Highway 416, Highway 16 extended from Johnstown into Ottawa, following Prince of Wales Drive and Heron Road to Bronson Street and the Trans-Canada Highway 417. For most of the portion south of Manotick, Highway 16 simply became the northbound lanes of Highway 416, while in and north of Manotick, Highway 416 was constructed on a new alignment which diverged to be several kilometres west of the old highway, due to high urbanization as the highway approached Nepean and downtown Ottawa.
The remainder of the old highway was downloaded as a regional road, giving the portion of the former Highway 16 running south from Ottawa to just beyond Manotick a county road-style designation of Regional Road 73.
The old Highway 16 routing in Ottawa remains in service as a series of city roads as Regional Road 44.
