Rainbow Lake is a small town in northern Alberta, Canada. It is located west of High Level at the end of Highway 58, in the Municipal District of MacKenzie.

The town carries the name of the nearby lake, formed on the Hay River, that was so called due to its curved shape.

History

The Town of Rainbow Lake was named for its proximity to Rainbow Lake. The lake was called Rainbow by the Cree and Slavery who inhabited the area for many years, because of its shape. A trapper by the name of Rainbow Fournier roamed the area in the late 19th century and some believe it may have been named after him.

* 1965: Oil was discovered in the area, which resulted in the oil boom, followed by the development of the town by 1966.
* 1967: The first post office is opened.
