United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.5square mile s (4.0km² ).None of the area is covered with water.The village is adjacent to
Interstate 81 and is located on US Route 11 atNew York State Route 178 .Sandy Creek is a stream the flows past the village on its south border.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,624 people, 705 households, and 425 families residing in the village. Thepopulation density was 1,054.0 people per square mile (407.2/km²). There were 781 housing units at an average density of 506.9/sq mi (195.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.91% White, 0.74% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.11% of the population.There were 705 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the village the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $30,677, and the median income for a family was $41,667. Males had a median income of $31,058 versus $25,724 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $18,452. About 12.1% of families and 15.3% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 22.6% of those under age 18 and 12.2% of those age 65 or over.References
