Battle of the Sacramento

Battle of the Sacramento

The Battle of the Sacramento took place on February 28, 1847 during the Mexican-American War. After capturing El Paso, Texas, Colonel Alexander Doniphan led the 1st Missouri Mounted Regiment south towards Chihuahua, Chihuahua. 15 miles (24 km) north of the city, Doniphan encountered a much larger force of Mexican cavalry, infantry and artillery. In a bold flank attack across a plateau, Doniphan routed the Mexican force, inflicting heavy casualties and capturing all of their artillery. Doniphan had only two men killed and seven wounded.

The Mexicans were unable to defend the city of Chihuahua, and Doniphan entered it on March 2, 1847, unopposed.
