One third of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council in South Yorkshire, England is elected each year, followed by one year without election. The council also has a directly elected mayor since 2001.

Mayoral referendum
On the 20 September 2001 Doncaster held a referendum on introducing a directly elected mayor. The result saw 35,453 (65%) vote in favour, while 19,398 (35%) opposed, on a turnout of 25%.[3]
