*This was the second attempt to translate the Torah into Greek (there was an unsuccessful attempt 61 years earlier), the ruling Greek-Egyptian emperorPtolemy according to legend, gathered 72 Torahsages , had them sequestered in 72 separate rooms, and ordered them to each produce a translation. On the 8th of Tevet of the Hebrew year 3515 (246 BCE) they produced 72 independent translations, including identical changes in 13 places (where they each felt that a literal translation would constitute a corruption of the Torah's true meaning] ). This Greek rendition became known as theSeptuagint , "of the seventy" (though later versions that carry this name are not believed to be true to the originals). Greek became a significant second language among Jews as a result of this translation. During Talmudic times, Tevet 8 was observed by some as a fast day, expressing the fear of the detrimental effect of the translation.9 Tevet - (313 BCE) - Death ofEzra
**Ezra , who led the return of the Jewish people to theLand of Israel after theBabylonian exile (423-353 BCE), oversaw the building of theSecond Temple , canonized the 24 books of the Bible and, as head of the "Great Assembly " legislated a series of laws and practices (including formalized prayer] ) which left a strong impact to Judaism until even this day. He died on the 9th of Tevet of the Hebrew year 3448 (313 BCE, which is exactly 1000 years after the Torah was given on Mount Sinai] ). Maryland was founded as anasylum forCatholics in1634 , and in the early days the denial of Christianity was acapital crime in Maryland. Anyone speaking negatively aboutMary or theApostles was subject to a fine orpublic whipping . The practice ofJudaism was not legalized in Maryland until1776 , but other restrictions remained in place. *RabbiYitzchak Kaduri , known in recent years as "the eldest of theKabbalists ," inIsrael , was born in Baghdad, Iraq in1898 . As a youth, he studied under "Ben Ish Chai " ( [Rabbi Yosef Chaim ofBaghdad ,1840 -1913 ) and was regarded as an illu (prodigy ) by the sages of the venerable Baghdad Jewish community. In1922 , Rabbi Yitzchak emigrated toPalestine and joined the ranks of the Jerusalem Kabbalists, even as he earned his living for many years as abookbinder . The Rabbi's fame grew over the years and thousands flocked to him to receive his counsel and blessing. He died on the 29th of Tevet of2006 , 108 years old.
