The district serves the residential communities of Denville Township (766 students), Rockaway Borough (315 students), Rockaway Township (1,250 students) and Wharton (331 students).[3]
As of the 2009-10 school year, the district's two schools had an enrollment of 2,806 students and 242.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.6.[1]
The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "GH", the third highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.[4]

For the 1996-97 school year, both Morris Hills High School[5] and Morris Knolls High School[6] were named as "Star Schools" by the New Jersey Department of Education, the highest honor that a New Jersey school can achieve.
