Jim Steen

Jim Steen

James ("Jim") Steen has been the head coach of the Lords and Ladies swim teams at Kenyon College since 1976.

His teams have won more NCAA championships than any other team in any division or any sport. The Lords have won 29 consecutive NCAA Division III Championships while the Ladies have won 22 (nonconsecutive) titles. In his 30 years at Kenyon, Coach Steen has developed over 134 NCAA Champions and over 300 All-Americans. He has coached several Olympic Trial qualifiers, Division I All-Americans, and been voted NCAA Division III Coach-of-the-year twelve times. Constantly demanding "student" before "athlete", he has produced more post-graduate scholars than any other coach in any division.

In 1996 Coach Steen took a one year sabbatical from Kenyon College to consult with many of America's top coaches prior to the Atlanta Olympic Games. He also took another sabbatical in 2002 to promote the building of the 77 million dollar Kenyon Athletic Center. Steen is the creator of the Power Rack, and began the Elite Swim Camps, which have grown to sports other than swimming. He has been offered Division 1 coaching positions as well as Olympic Coaching positions, but has turned them down, showing his loyalty to his perennial powerhouse that he has built in Gambier, Ohio.

He is a really nice guy!
