Dave Fluri is a union and community activist from
West Nipissing, Ontario ,Canada . He was born inBrantford, Ontario in 1956 and was raised in theNiagara Peninsula .After a brief stint as an employee of the Ontario
Jockey Club, Fluri became a member of the Canadian Paperworkers Union (now the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers) Local 101. In 1975, Fluri attendedLaurentian University in Sudbury,Ontario , where he studied French, German, English and Mathematics.In 1982, Fluri began work as a professional photographer, joining the Professional Photographers of Ontario in 1983.
In 1984, Fluri returned to post-secondary studies, entering the Honours Fisheries Biology program at the
University of Guelph . He was graduated, , in 1987. That same year, he undertook graduate studies. He was graduated from the University of Guelph with a Master's degree in Aquatic Sciences, in 1992.In 1990, Fluri began work with the
Government of Ontario as abiologist . As a member of theOntario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), Local 635, Fluri served asvice president and, later, aspresident of his local.After working on various campaigns, Fluri became a candidate in the 2004 federal election for the
New Democratic Party in theNipissing—Timiskaming riding.In the 2004 election, Fluri nearly tripled the vote for the New Democrats from the previous election, garnering the largest total vote for a
social democrat since the election of 1945, when J. Bénonie Levert of theCo-operative Commonwealth Federation came second in the election.More recently, Fluri was involved with the anti-privatization campaign for the North Bay Regional
Hospital .In December 2005, Fluri was acclaimed as the New Democratic candidate for Nipissing—Timiskaming in the 2006 election. In that election, Fluri increased his total vote and his percentage of the popular vote but still finished a distant third behind
Anthony Rota .Fluri is married and has two children.
