Schoenherr was named after German farming family who owned a large amount of farmland which was bought up for the road's construction. The last pieces of this land were purchased to build
Sterling Heights High School .It is of note that Detroiters pronounce Schoenherr like SHAY-NER, though the authentic German pronunciation is closer to SHONE-HAIR. It is named after a German farmer who arrived in South Eastern Michigan in 1840. During immigration the name was Anglicized to the present spelling and pronunciation. The family has since adopted the pronunciation.
History
Until the late 1980s, Schoenherr did not exist between Utica Road and Clinton River Road, about a quarter mile span. That changed shortly before the closing of Kleino Bridge which was about an eighth of a mile west of Schoenherr.
