Monte Cara Elevation 490 m (1,608 ft) Prominence 460 m (1,509 ft) Listing Ultra Location northwestern São Vicente Coordinates 16°52′30″N 25°02′15″W / 16.875°N 25.0375°WCoordinates: 16°52′30″N 25°02′15″W / 16.875°N 25.0375°W Monte Cara (meaning “face mount” in Portuguese) is a small mountain in the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde west of Mindelo as well as Porto Grande, the town of Lazareto lies in the eastern part. The mountain colors are dark brown to hazelnut. The mountain is rocky and deforested, filled with jagged cliffs and mountaintops with some soil lying in the bottom. Beach sands cover the northern part and extend about 100 m into the mountain. The islands' main plain covers the east and the south, a slopey plain in the northeastern part of the area and the Atlantic Ocean covers the west and north. A panoramic view of the southern portion of Santo Antão Island as well as the western and the eastern portions of the island can be seen except for the eastern and the extreme southern parts and also Santa Luzia.
The origin of the name comes in fact of a human face looking at the sky and is the ex libris of the city of Mindelo.
