Lethbridge College, formerly Lethbridge Community College, was opened in 1957 as the first public community college in Canada. Over 7,000 students attend the Lethbridge, Alberta, institution.

History

Lethbridge College, formerly Lethbridge Community College, was opened in 1957 as the first public community college in Canada. On 14 February 2007, the college's executive council voted to change the name of the college to "Lethbridge College". [Citation

Programs

Lethbridge College offers a range of different educational opportunities, including business and management, design and technology, justice studies, health and human services, agriculture and the environment, trades, preparatory studies, and university transfer. The college provides vocational training in more than 50 career areas via one-year certificates, two-year diplomas, apprenticeships, applied degrees, and pre-employment programs. The college has an active athletics department and fields men's and women's teams in basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, and golf.

The following programs are available:

*Certificates and diplomas that prepare graduates for career employment and, in some areas, further study.
*Pre-employment and apprenticeship trades programs that provide graduates with education and training in specialized skill areas for the workplace.
*A university transfer program which provides a pathway for students’ completion of undergraduate degree programs.
*Applied baccalaureate degrees that prepare graduates for career employment.
*Collaborative baccalaureate degrees offered in cooperation with Alberta universities which offer students degree completion opportunities.
*Baccalaureate degrees that prepare graduates for further study and employment and offer unique learning opportunities that complement but do not compete with opportunities already provided in the region.
*Preparatory studies that assist students in making the transition to college certificate and diploma programs through a range of academic preparation and English as a second language programs.

Athletics

The mascot is Kody the Kodiak.

The college has a highly successful cross-country running program, winning many national championships.Fact|date=July 2008 The men’s cross country Team won the 2006 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Championship, and the National Championship. The women's team also won National titles in 2003 and 2004.

The women’s basketball team won their second ACAC gold medal in 4 years. Defeating defending champion Mount Royal College 67–59. They won the bronze medal at the 2006 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association National Championships in Cornwall, Ontario where they defeated the Okanagan Lakers 79–77. Lethbridge College also competes in ACAC Curling as a club team.
