The council consists of 78 councillors, three for each of the city's 26 wards. It is currently controlled by Labour and led by Nick Forbes.
The Current Lord Mayor is Brenda Hindmarsh and the Deputy Lord Mayor (Sheriff) is Geoff O'Brien for 2010 to 2011.

Political control
The council had been under the control of the Labour Party from its reconstitution in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, until 2004. Elections are usually by thirds, in three years out of four. 2004 saw boundary changes and all seats were up for re-election.
Mr Barry Rowland is the Council's Chief Executive, as of September 2009.
It was announced that two of Newcastle City Councillors were to be made working Peers, for Labour Sir Jeremy Beecham and for the Liberal Democrats current Councillor Leader John Shipley.
