Marryatville is a small suburb to the east of Adelaide's central business district. Along with neighbouring Heathpool, it is part of the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters whereas all the suburbs around it save Kensington are not.

Shopping

The Marryatville Shopping Centre is located at 242-248 Kensington Road. It includes a Woolworths supermarket, newsagent, liquor store, Bakers Delight bakery , yogurt shop, pharmacy, cafe and a Noodle Box Asian takeaway store .

The shopping centre was redeveloped in 2005-06 when the existing BI-LO supermarket was demolished and rebuilt.

Several other retail outlets, including a service station, hotel and Indian restaurant, a cinema and professional rooms, are in the immediate vicinity.

Schools

Marryatville High School, notable for its music program, is located within the suburb. The school was formerly Norwood Boys Technical School until it was renamed and opened to both sexes in 1976.

Marryatville was settled in the 19th century by the Scarfe family, whose name later became associated with South Australian retailer Harris Scarfe. Eden Park, the grand two-storey Victorian house the family built, is now used as the high school's Year 12 campus; and the timber stables, a short distance away, have been converted into a music centre.

In 2005 Marryatville's Performing Arts Centre, The Forge, was opened. It serves as a performance area for year 11 and 12 Drama Productions and is also used by outside theatre groups. The film Hey Hey It's Esther Blueberger (released 2008) included several scenes filmed at Marratville High School.

The local state primary school, Marryatville Primary School, is actually located in the adjacent suburb Kensington.

The school was established in 1883 at a site on Kensington Road, and moved to its current location in 1978. The first principal was Mr. William J. Kent.^[2] Classes range from Reception to Year 7, with up to 400 students at the school. Most Year 8 students enter Marryatville High School with some students zoned to Norwood Morialta High School or others going to private schools near by with some girls going to Loreto Marryatville.^[3]

It also provides "before and after school" care and vacation care. There is an active children's art studio, drama academy and Junior and Senior Choir. On Saturdays there is also a Japanese language and culture school.^[4]

First Creek

First Creek runs through the suburb, originating from the hills. Floods in November 2005 overflowed First Creek’s banks heavily. Many houses and Marryatville High School became flooded with debris and soil from upstream. There were no fatalities from the flood but it did cause considerable damage to some houses and Marryatville High School's grounds. Loreto Marryatville also suffered some damage with the library being flooded (but the books got no damage) and the flooding from the library getting into the year 3 class rooms with 3 Blue being hardest hit as the water got on the carpet and it took 2 weeks to get the classrooms back to normal. In that time, the year 3's used a multipurpose room with a whiteboard as their classrooms for 2 weeks.
