The Twentieth Century

The development of the town began as early as 1912 with the conversion of a long disused factory (the Valsacco company factory) to one of Explosive. The first group of houses were not located where the town center now stands, but then at the call of the railway station "Segni-Paliano", then called Segni-Station Colleferro Paliano after the birth of the town of Colleferro: a first group of houses (including the Church of St. Joachim) was built in the then territory of Valmontone (aka Segni Scalo).

The engineer Leopoldo Parodi Delfino (former senator and son of the founder of the National Bank, then Bank of Italy) and Senator Giovanni Bombrini founded the 'Bombrini Parodi Delfino explosives factory and, at the same location, was created a new group of houses known as "BPD Village", into which many workers moved their families from different regions of Italy. The town was also the "Lime & Cement Segni" (subsequently acquired by Italcementi), which led to the valley floor and worked the material quarried from the nearby town of Segni to produce cement for construction.

Colleferro, whose territory originally belonged to the municipalities of Valmontone (near the airport and part of the capital city) and of Rome, continued its urban sprawl for all Twenties and [ [Year 1930 | thirty]], until it became an independent town in 1935. Later the town of Colleferro added to their territory limited portions of the neighboring municipalities of Segni and Paliano.

During WWII Colleferro was repeatedly bombarded with the aim to destroy the explosives factory. Citizens found shelter in a series of caves and tunnels built under the "Village BPD" and known by the name of "refugee."
