Elbridge Ayer Burbank

"Elbridge Ayer (E. A.) Burbank" (born August 10, 1858 in Harvard, Illinois, died April 21, 1949 in San Francisco, California) was an American artist who sketeched and painted many Native Americans, including being the only person to paint Geronimo from life.Fact|date=March 2008

Family

Elbridge was born on August 10, 1858 in Harvard, Illinois to Abner Jewett and Anna Maria (Ayer) Burbank. He died April 21, 1949 in San Francisco, California after being struck by a cable car on January 27 in front of the Manx Hotel (now the Villa Florence). Elbridge was a second cousin, three times removed from Luther Burbank - and a second cousin, twice removed from Gerald Ford, 38th president of the US.

His uncle, Edward E. Ayer, was a successful business magnate, museum benefactor and an avid antiquarian collector of books, original manuscripts and other materials relating to the history and ethnology of Native American peoples at the time of European encounter. His collection, one of the founding donations to the Newberry Library in Chicago, contains a number of Elbridge's works.

Life

E. A. was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, referred to as 'manic depression' at the time, and was treated at several different facilities during his life - most notably for over ten years at the State Mental Hospital in Napa, California.

'E. A.' was the only artist to paint Geronimo from life. He painted or sketched more than 1,200 native Americans from 125 tribes. He spent many months, over several years, at the Hubbell Trading Post. Burbank, Oklahoma is named after him.

Final Resting Place(s): Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, San Francisco, California, then Forest View Abby in Rockford, Illinois, then in 1984 to Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Harvard, Illinois.
