History
The township was organized between June 7th through 9th,
1824 , and is comprised of land included in theSandusky Plains of Ohio. Land in Scott Township is generally flat, with shallow slopes. Prairie grasses and other native plants were destroyed in its settlement; ditches were added to aid drainage of farm fields. The majority of farms in Scott Township today producewheat ,corn , andsoybean s.In the
1920s , the township was a favoriteJim Thorpe (who played for theOorang Indians NFL team inLaRue, Ohio ) who hunted near the "Wolf Pond" north of Linn Hipsher Road. In1942 , the United States Federal Government seized approximately one-fourth of the total land in the township for the construction of theScioto Ordnance Plant (this same action also resulted in the building ofMarion Engineering Depot ). Families living within the boundaries of the facility were given less than 60 days to vacate their homes and farms. Following the end of the war, the land was sold back to the public, however by that time, many of the homes and farmsteads that had been within the site had been leveled by the US Army; few families who had lived in the area before the government action returned to the area having established themselves in other communities. The township was hard hit by the
Great Blizzard of 1978 . Quail, once plentiful in the area, have not been seen in the township since then.Government
The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township clerk, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the clerkship or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
