philosopher andVice-Chancellor ofOxford University . Before his knighthood (in the 1986 New Year's Honours List) he was commonly known as G. J. Warnock.He was educated at
Winchester College andNew College Oxford . Warnock served with theIrish Guards until 1945. He then entered New College with a classical scholarship. AtMagdelen College, Oxford , he was elected to a Fellowship in 1949. After spending three years at Brasenose, he returned to Oxford as a Fellow and tutor inphilosophy . In 1970 was elected to Principal ofHertford College, Oxford , where there is now a society and student house named after him. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford from 1981 to 1985.Warnock married
Mary Warnock ,philosophy fellow ofSt Hugh's College, Oxford and later Baroness Warnock, in 1949. They had two sons and three daughters. He retired to live nearMarlborough in 1988 and died in 1995.Works
