first_use_date =April 8 2001 Hibernia Atlantic is a transatlantic submarine communications cable system in the North Atlantic Ocean which connects Canada, the United States, Ireland and England.
It was originally built by
360networks in 2000, placed in receivership in 2001, purchased in 2003 and began carrying traffic in 2005. It is now owned and operated by CVC Acquisition Co. (Ireland) Limited, a subsidiary ofColumbia Ventures Corporation .The cable system is a
Tycom -designed TerawaveDWDM system transporting 10Gb/sSDH /SONET signals. As of the end of 2004, it had a transmission capacity of 160Gbit /s and a total cable length of 13,200 km. It is capable of being upgraded to a capacity of 1,920 Gbit/s. It started operation on 8 April 2001.Two separate cables traverse the Atlantic but terminate at non-diverse points in Canada (Herring Cove) and in England (Southport).
