Seoni District is a district of
Madhya Pradesh state in centralIndia . The town ofSeoni is the district headquarters.As of 2001 the district had a population of 1,166,608. Bagri Rajput (Baghel) are major residents of the district. They occupy about 250 villages of the district.The District of Seoni forms part of the
Satpura tableland, containing the headwaters of theWainganga . It is largely covered withforest . It has an area of 3,206 square miles. The district is remarkable for the beauty of its scenery and the fertility of its valleys. Kanha kisley national park is about 55 km on mandla road. The northern and western portions include theplateau s of Lakhnhdon and Seoni; the eastern section consists of the watershed and elevated basin of the Wainganga; and in the south-west is a narrow strip of rocky land known as Dongartal. The plateaus of Seoni and Lakhngdon vary in height from 1,800 to 2,000 ft.; they are well cultivated and clear ofjungle , and theirtemperature is always moderate and healthy.Geological ly the north part of Seoni consists of trap hills and the south ofcrystal line rock. Thesoil of the plateaus is the rich blackcotton soil formed by distintegrated trap, of which about two-thirds of the district are said to consist; but towards the south, wherecliff s ofgneiss and other primitive formations occur, the soil issiliceous and contains a large proportion ofclay . The chiefriver is the Wainganga, with its affluents the Sagar, Theli, Bijna and Thanwar; other streams are the Timar and the Sher, tributaries of theNerbudda . The annualrainfall averages 53 in. The principal crops arewheat ,millet s,rice ,pulse ,oil-seed s andcotton . Threerailway lines of theBengal -Nagpur system traverse the district. The district is part ofJabalpur Division .Rudyard Kipling 's "Jungle Books" are set in the Seoni District (spelled Seeonee in the books).External links
