Biography

A former captain in the Israeli Navy,[1] he coached Melbourne Croatia for the 1985 and 1986 NSL seasons.[2] The following year he coached Maribyrnong Polonia for the initial 12 rounds, until the club fell into financial difficulties.

The team eventually went on to win the 1987 Victorian State League title. This was followed by stints at Croydon City, Heidelberg United and the Brisbane Strikers, before going on to secure a string of successes in the Queensland Premier League with NorthStar and Queensland Lions.

Queensland Roar

Appointed the coach of the Queensland Roar for the inaugural season of the A-League, the Roar missed the finals, though the side’s attacking style won plaudits from the media and supporters. A student of the game, his outspoken views and endless stream of colourful quotes in the style of Jose Mourinho has made many headlines. After fluctuating fortunes as manager of the Roar during the 2006/7 season, rumours were rife in Brisbane of a change in coaching staff.

Scoring only one goal in 12 hours of football, the Roar slipped from an auspicious start to the 2006/7 season to fourth position (after Round 15). With time left in the season for a recovery, it was announced on Sunday November 12, 2006 that Bleiberg had resigned as coach.[3] Widespread speculation that former Socceroos coach Frank Farina, would be announced as his successor at a press conference on Monday November 13, 2006, proved true.[4]

Gold Coast United FC

Throughout 2007 and early 2008, Bleiberg had repeatedly backed for a new A-League club, Gold Coast Galaxy, to be based on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Ultimately, the Galaxy consortium led by real estate magnate Fred Taplin, was trumped by a rival bid from mining billionaire Clive Palmer. Upon receiving expansion approval from the FFA, Palmer tabbed Bleiberg as the head coach and football director for Gold Coast United.[5]
