The Tune

"The Tune" is an animated film by American filmmaker Bill Plympton.

Plot Summary

Del, a hard-working songwriter, is trying to write the perfect song for his slimeball boss, Mr. Mega, so he can keep his job and his girlfriend Didi. As he rushes to work, he gets lost in a cloverleaf highway and ends up lost in a town called Flooby Nooby, where he meets an Elvis-impersonating dog, a noseless cab driver, and a psychotic bellhop as he tries to get to Mr. Mega's office to deliver the song.

Background

"The Tune", Bill Plympton's first Animated Feature, premiered September 4th, 1992 at The Sundance Film Festival. Although the film did not enjoy the success that "I Married a Strange Person" (1997) or "Hair High" (2004) later would, the movie opened new doors for Plympton in the animation realm. It was also the first Animated feature to have every drawing done solely by the author—a first in animation history. "The Tune" is also based on Plympton's earlier films, including "The Wiseman" (1990) (originally part of a group of Animated Segments aired on Mtv in 1990), and included the Elvis Dog, who also made an earlier appearance in Plympton's film "Dig My Do" (1990). The film was nominated for a number of awards in 1992 and 1993, and was supported by Maureen McElheron, a longtime friend of Plympton. Maureen was the inspiration for Bill's breakthrough film "Your Face (film)" (1987), and has composed the music for most of his films. The film also received the support of P.C. Vey. Now a famous artist for various magazine publications, Vey used to work for Plympton from 1991-1997.
