Sighthill is a
district in the Scottish city ofGlasgow . It is situated north of theRiver Clyde . In the past Sighthill was included as part of GreaterSpringburn . The area is bordered to the East by the Springburn Bypass road and the to West by theGlasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line running intoQueen Street Station . The district is primarily residential, consisting of ten 20 storey tower blocks, five storey deck access blocks and some single and two storey houses. Designed by Crudens Ltd, the scheme was built between 1964 and 1969 on the 'Soda Waste'. This was derelict ground on whichCharles Tennant 's St.Rollox Chemical Works, at one time the largest chemical manufacturer in the world, used to dump waste chemicals until its closure in 1964.After the demolition of one of the
Tower block s in July 2008, it now consists of 9 multi-storey blocks split evenly across two sub-areas, Pinkston and Fountainwell. The Fountainwell side is due to be redeveloped in the next few years with all the high rise flats being demolished. The future of the Pinkston blocks is however still undecided.Sighthill cemetery opened in 1840 and within it stands the memorial to John Baird and Andrew Hardie, the leaders of the 1820
Radical War otherwise known as the 1820 Insurrection.External links
