At the 2006 census, its population was 34,632, in 8,210 families.[2]
There are several reliefs from Lullubian period in Sarpol-e Zahab.
The population of Sarpol-e Zahab comprises Kurds who speak Kalhori, Gorani, and Sorani (Jaf) dialects of Kurdish, and are respectively adherents of Shia Islam , Yarsanism and Sunni Islam.
