- Roman Catholicism in Guam
-
The Roman Catholic Church in Guam is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome. Roman Catholicism here is a product of Spanish colonial control. The patron saint of Guam and the Marianas Islands is Santa Marian Kamalen, or Our Lady of Camarin.[1] On October 14th, 1965, the vicariate apostolic was raised to a diocese.[2] The first visit by the Roman Catholic Pope was in 1981.[2] Guam sent a delegation of young people for the first time to World Youth Day 2008 when it was held in Sydney, Australia.[3]
The leadership of the Archdiocese of Agana and particularly Archbishop Anthony Apuron are the targets of criticism over a letter that was distributed by his archdiocese comparing gay rights activism to Islamic terrorism. [4] [5]
To date, Apuron has never retracted the statements which include the following: "Islamic fundamentalists clearly understand the damage that homosexual behavior inflicts on a culture. That is why they repress such behavior by death. Their culture is anything but one of selfabsorption. It may be brutal at times, but any culture that is able to produce wave after wave of suicide bombers (women as well as men) is a culture that at least knows how to value selfsacrifice." [6] [7][8]
