Orthopedic mattress

An Orthopedic Mattress is a mattress designed to support the joints, back and the overall muscular skeletal body. [1][2]

With innovations in the medical fields in the 1950s, many manufacturers of mattresses made an effort to improve their products and give them a product edge over competitors. It was in the midst this culture that the concept of a mattress that was medically superior was born. The Orthopedic Mattress was the final product of many years of research and development from many different companies.

There is no government standard or official designation that will qualify one mattress orthopedic and the other not. This reality has created much confusion in the bedding industry, to the point that the typical consumer is not able to determine if a mattress is orthopedic or not.

For many back pain sufferers, the orthopedic mattress can offer a massive improvement in their quality of life. The appropriate support, and a reduction in pressure point pain can help sufferers to get a good night sleep and much needed pain relief. The cumulative effect of chronic back and neck pain has a profound effect.

The modern orthopedic mattress comes in a variety of designs and materials. Memory foam, a technology from the space age, has become the current trend in support mattresses, although the classic coil sprung varieties are still as common as ever. Memory foam has however, produced a revolution in support bedding, with mattress toppers becoming a great way to revitalise that old, or overly firm mattress.
