Orient-Macksburg Community School District is a school district in Adair County, Madison County, Adams County, and Union County, southwest Iowa. It is the result of the consolidation of schools in the communities of Orient and Macksburg, which occurred in the 1960s. All grades pre-kindergarten through 12th are housed in one facility, which is located at 201 S. School Street, Orient, Iowa. The school's mascot is the Bulldog.

Projections

The Orient-Macksburg School District is projected to continue a decline in enrollment. The Iowa Department of Education predicts an average decrease of 12 students per year over the next five years. That would peg the district's K-12 enrollment at 126 students for the 2013-2014 school year, with an estimated certified enrollment during that year of 154 students[11]

Faculty and Staff

In 2009-2010, Orient-Macksburg employed 20 full-time and one part-time teachers. The average regular annual salary of a full-time instructor in the district was $39,081. An average beginning teacher saw a starting salary of $28,000.

Teachers at Orient-Macksburg carried an average 17.0 years of experience in the educational field, exceeding the state average of 14.8. Instructors have spent a slightly longer amount of time at Orient-Macksburg compared to those at most other Iowa school districts, with an average 12.6 years in the district. Statewide, teachers have been at their current district for 11.2 years. The average age of instructors at the school is 45.7 years-old, older than the state average of 42.2. Of the 20 teachers, one (5.0%) holds an advanced degree.[3]

Orient-Macksburg's superintendent is a shared position with Prescott Community Schools. As of the 2009-2010 school year, the superintendent was paid an annual salary of $90,000 for 260 contract days.[12]

Technology

Orient-Macksburg's 2009-2010 student-to-computer ratio was 1.5 students per computer, nearly twice the statewide rate of 2.9 students per computer.[13] In the 2005-2006 school year, the district offered three courses via telecommunication. One of those courses was available through the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). The other two were internet classes.[14] During the 2009-2010 school year, the district's internet access was via the Iowa Communications Network, administered through its area education agency. Wireless networking is available throughout the facilities.[15]

Free/Reduced Lunch Eligibility

In the 2009-2010 school year, 37.2% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, slightly above the statewide average of 36.8%.[16]

Suspension/Expulsion Rate

During the 2008-2009 school year, officials at Orient-Macksburg reported a total of three suspensions. All were the result of fighting without injury. No expulsions were reported in that time period.[17]

Attendance Rate

The attendance rate for K-12 students at Orient-Macksburg during the 2008-2009 school year was reported at 95.7%, slightly better than the statewide rate of 95.1%.[18]

In the 2008-2009 school year, the statewide average AYP in reading for 3rd graders was 79.7%, while Iowa 4th graders averaged 83.8% and 5th graders in Iowa scored an average 82.1%. The statewide average AYP in reading for 6th graders was 71.3%, while Iowa 7th graders averaged 73.3% and 8th graders in Iowa scored an average 75.0%. High school juniors in Iowa saw an average reading AYP score of 77.2%.[23]

In the 2008-2009 school year, the statewide average AYP in math for 3rd graders was 79.6%, while Iowa 4th graders averaged 84.1% and 5th graders in Iowa scored an average 81.6%. The statewide average AYP in math for 6th graders was 77.1%, while Iowa 7th graders averaged 80.3% and 8th graders in Iowa scored an average 78.6%. High school juniors in Iowa saw an average math AYP score of 79.2%.[27]

Talented and Gifted

Orient-Macksburg identified four students, or 2.3%, of its K-12 enrollment as Talented and Gifted in the 2009-2010 school year. That statistic is well below the Iowa average of 9.4% for the same year.[28]

High School Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from Orient-Macksburg High School in the 2009-2010 school year, a student was required to complete a minimum 3.00 units in science courses, 3.00 units of math courses, 3.00 units in social studies, 4.00 English units, and no specified foreign language or fine arts units. A total of 12.00 units of electives was to have been completed as well. This made for a total 25.00 units required for graduation.[29]

Post-Secondary Intentions

In the 2007-2008 school year, 78.3% of graduating seniors indicated plans to attend some sort of post-secondary institution. Meanwhile, 17.4% of seniors intended to seek immediate employment or other training, while 4.3% were uncertain of their future plans. Of the students who intended to seek post-secondary education, 27.8% said they planned to continue to a four-year college, while 72.2% would attend a community college.[36]

Student Makeup & Diversity

In 2008-2009, the Orient-Macksburg School District reported 41.7% female students compared to 58.3% male students in K-12 enrollment. During the same school year, White students composed 94.1% of the student body in grades K-12, while 0.0% were African-American, 1.1% Asian, 2.1% Hispanic, and 2.7% Native American.[5]

The school district reported 0.0% of enrollment as migrants or immigrants in 2006-2007.[37][38]

Early Childhood/Preschool

The Orient-Macksburg School District offers Shared Visions Preschool, which is accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).[39] The program is one of 141 in the state of Iowa with this certification.[40]

An early childhood special education program is also offered at Orient-Macksburg.[39]
